The 47th Superman Celebration
is taking place June 13-June 15
Following the opening ceremony, “Honoring a Metropolis Hero: Jim Hambrick Tribute” will begin with the dedication of a historical marker in front of the Super Museum at 9:15 a.m. Immediately afterward, a special video presentation will be shown at 9:30 a.m. at the City National Bank Metro Tent. The video will be shown throughout the weekend at the Super Museum and the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce.
This year, MSC welcomes four super guests. Available on Friday, June 13, only will be Michael Ironside. Dean Cain and Odette Annable will appear on Saturday, June 14, only. Anais Fairweather will appear Friday and Saturday at Artist Alley/Writers Way.
This will be Dean’s third celebration appearance, while it will be the first for Ironside, Annable and Fairweather.
The four will be featured in Q&A sessions during the weekend. Sessions will take place on the City National Bank Metro Stage. Scheduled are: Ironside on Friday, June 13, at noon; Fairweather on Friday at 1:30 p.m.; Annable on Saturday, June 14, at noon; and Cain on Saturday at 1 p.m. Each will appear at the Superman statue 15 minutes before their Q&A.
Fairweather will be a special guest at the Metropolis Veterinary Clinic Smallville Tent on Friday, June 13, when she presents “Super Voices” at 1:30 p.m.

SICIL Artist Alley & Writer’s Way is expected to be a busy area with artists, writers, and creators displaying their talents. Special guests include Bob McLeod, Gavin Smith, Steven Walden and Edward Gross.
Smith will share how to “Draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” from 3:30-4:40 p.m. on Friday, June 13, at the Metropolis Veterinary Clinic Smallville Tent.
McLeod and Smith will be featured in a comic creators panel from 4-5 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the City National Bank Metro Tent.
SICIL Artist Alley & Writer’s Way is located in the basement of the Southern Illinois Independent Living building, at 101 W. Eighth St., near the Lois Lane statue. It will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14, and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, June 15.
The weekend also features a variety of activities for Superman Celebration’s littlest superheroes at the Metropolis Veterinary Clinic Smallville Tent, located on the corner of Eighth and Market streets, next to the Lois Lane statue.
The tent will also be the location for the annual Kid’s Superhero Costume Contest at 5 p.m. Friday, June 13; the Superbaby Contest, Miss Supergirl and Mr. Superboy Pageant on Saturday, June 14, beginning at 4 p.m.; and the Superdog Show at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Annual events benefiting local organizations will continue to be a part of the 47th Superman Celebration. They are:
• the MCDAC Super 5K Fun Run/Walk at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Dorothy Miller Park, which is located on Front Street near Harrah’s Metropolis Hotel & Casino, with registration from 5:30-6:45 p.m.;
• the 37th Kiwanis Superman Bicycle Ride beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 14, from Washington Park with in-person registration from 7-8 a.m.;
• the Metropolis Rotary Club’s 38th annual Super Car Show on Sunday, June 15, at Fort Massac State Park with registration from 8 a.m. until noon and the show beginning at 9 a.m. with the trophy presentation in the afternoon.

The City National Bank Metro Tent will also be the site for several returning and new events.
Stump the Superman Expert is slated for 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 13, while Superman Jeopardy with the Rinaldis is 3 p.m. Friday, June 13, 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, and 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 15.
The eating contest is at 11 a.m. Sunday.
The 42nd presentation of the Lois Lane Award by the Metropolis Planet will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 13.
“Up, Up & Acquired!: Superman Collecting 101” with Zach Curtis will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, providing advice for the beginning or seasoned Superman collector.
Dance Friday night away with the Killer Pimps, a Southern Illinois-based cover band featuring songs from the 1980s through today. The music begins at 7 p.m.
Music will also take the stage from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 14, with crowd favorite Jamie Aaron Kelly. Enjoy music from Ray Charles and Elvis Presley to Niall Horan and U2, all in Kelly’s own style.

This year’s celebration will also feature a Super Drone Show at 8:30 p.m Saturday, June 14, by Skyglow Drone Productions.
The Superman and superhero themed display will be choreographed to superhero music, which with an FM transmitter will play through the car radio.
“The show is going to be amazing,” said Trish Steckenrider, executive director of the Greater Metropolis Convention & Visitors Bureau, which received a grant for the show.
The best viewing of the drone show will be in the Harrah’s Metropolis parking lot facing the railroad bridge.

Take part in the Steel City Shuffle Poker Run/Walk from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday, June 15. More information will be at the Market Street Info Booth.
The Heroes & Villains Costume Contest will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at the City National Bank Metro Tent, followed by the closing ceremony of the 47th Metropolis Superman Celebration.
And, as always, the yearly fan favorite weekend will be busy with contests, fun and games. Attendees will enjoy the many vendors lining Market Street with a variety of tempting treats.

In conjunction with the celebration, the following streets will be closed Thursday, June 12, through Sunday, June 15: Market Street from the northeast corner of the courthouse lawn through Eighth Street; Sixth Street from the detention center driveway to the Legence Bank drive-thru; Seventh Street from the former Happy Hearts back parking lot to the city property on the east side of Market Street; and Eighth Street on the west side from NAPA to the SICIL drive-thru.
The Metropolis Superman Celebration is hosted by the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce, the City of Metropolis and the Greater Metropolis Convention & Visitors Bureau.
