From Childhood Dream to Exhibit Spotlight

Black Creativity Artist Q&A: Jennifer Turner
The Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition features more than 150 different pieces by nearly 100 artists from Chicago and beyond. Behind each piece is a story — some describe the scene, others detail the artistic process and nearly all reveal something unique about the person who created it. We talked with some of the exhibit’s featured artists to learn more about the creatives behind the work. Here is an excerpt from our interview with Jennifer Turner, who created Contemplation.

What inspired your piece?

Contemplation was inspired by the power of stillness and introspection. In a world where we’re always constantly moving, I wanted to capture the moment and the inner strength that's involved with just being still and not having to be in the world of always having to hustle.

What does being a part of this exhibition mean to you?
Being part of this exhibition is an honor. I was telling some friends that being in this is something that I have wanted since I was in elementary school. We had came here, I want to say, maybe around first or second grade, and we saw the exhibit. And so, this was like a dream come true for me. This is just a really big deal.
